First Sunday Potluck Lunch and Conversation

Our First Sunday Potluck Lunch will be held on June 7, immediately following worship. Please bring your favorite dish to share for lunch, and join the continuing conversation about our congregation's life together.

Bread for the World Offering of Letters

On Sunday, May 17, Light Street participated in the Bread for the World Offering of Letters. We received twenty-six letters written by church members and friends calling on Congress to rework foreign assistance to make it more effective in reducing hunger and poverty around the world. Many thanks to Bob Jewett for initiating and coordinating this public advocacy effort.

Flea Market/Silent Auction Raises $5,000+

A Letter of Thanks from the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship

Dear Friends at Light Street Presbyterian Church:

The Presbyterian Peace Fellowship Colombia Accompaniment Program wishes to thank you for your generous gift last December of $700 to our ongoing work. As you may know, the Presbyterian Church in Colombia works under great pressure as it serves impoverished and forcibly displaced people residing in areas surround major cities in Colombia.

Leaders in the Colombian Presbyterian Church are often threatened when they provide assistance by identifying and training community leaders in these depressed circumstances. They also provide support and pastoral counseling to families and children grieving the loss of their husbands and fathers. They provide services in job training and entrepreneurial activities. Equally important, they provide worship and Christian education opportunities.

Due to their dedication to the spiritual, social and economic development of displaced people, Colombian Presbyterian and other church leaders receive death threats from the armed groups doing the displacement. That is where accompaniment comes in. Just as in blblical times, the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship sends out our US accompaniers in twos. They walk and talk with the same displaced people with whom our Colombian Presbyterian leaders work. They hear the terrifying stories of displacement. They worship and pray with our brothers and sisters in the Colombian Presbyterian Church. Together we are learning how to bring peace to threatened communities and to the Colombian nation. The presence of our US accompaniers makes a difference and sends a message to those who would do our brothers and sisters harm. It tells them that we are watching what is going on and that we care for our sisters and brothers in Colombia.

We thank you for your empowering gift and your care.

Sincerely,
Rev. Sarah Henken
Colombia Accompaniment Coordinator

Interest & Talent Directory

Retta Barkley and Kelli Langley have volunteered to create an Interest & Talent Directory with information about Light Street members and friends that will help us better connect with one another in a variety of ways. However, they need everyone to complete and return an Interests/Talents Survey. The survey forms were sent out with The Enlightener last month. Please fill out a survey and return it to the church office. If you need another copy, just ask.

The LSPC Green Corner -- Caring for Creation

Baltimore Presbytery's Care for Creation Task Group has a vision and a mission.

Its vision is that each congregation in the Baltimore Presbytery will deepen its understanding of:

* our spiritual connection to and love for all of God's creation, including humans and the natural systems that sustain us
* the complex ways in which all of creation is increasingly interconnected and interdependent
* our responsibility as stewards to care lovingly and justly for all creation
* the urgent need for sustainable living

Further, that these understandings should be reflected not only in each congregation's worship and mission, but also in the daily life of each individual.

Its mission is to reach out to all congregations in the Presbytery, to encourage and assist them to share this vision and to reflect it in their congregational and individual lives. To do this we will provide resources and support for:

* study and worship to change lives of people and congregations;
* guidance for sustainable living; and
* environmental stewardship action and social witness

For more information about the Presbytery's Care for Creation Task Group, visit their website or send an email to Kelli Langley.

Sunday Morning Bible Study

On Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m., a small group of church members and friends gather for coffee and Bible study. The group is using the curriculum "Jesus 101" and the current course of study is "Jesus - Extreme Forgiver". The group is open; newcomers are always welcome. For more information, contact Bonnie Cosner or Debbie Szostak.

Language and Learning

The Mambo Family is from Malawi and would like to teach us some of their native greetings and salutations in an effort to expand the diverse knowledge base of our members and promote information sharing and exchange. The Mambo's native language is Chichewa. Chichewa is the national language of the Republic of Malawi. The Mambo family would like to share the following with Light Street members and friends:

English = We are very proud to be part of Light Street Church. May God bless our church.

Chichewa = Ndife osangalala kukhala banja la tchalichi cha Light Street. Ambuye adalitse tchalichi chathu.

Some Basic Conversational Words and Phrases:

Good to see you = Takondwera Kukonani

Thanks = Zikomo

Bye = Pitani Bwino

To expand your learning, the following website has additional materials: Chichewa Learning Materials.

Join Us at the Big Tent! June 11-13, 2009, in Atlanta Georgia

Discover a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) that is more exciting, more diverse, and more faithful than you ever imagined. The Big Tent has been called "a denominational happening" and "a big Presbyterian family reunion." Big Tent will inspire you and make you proud to be Presbyterian. The event will be celebratory, diverse and participatory, with intergenerational activities. There will be common worship services and shared meals, an exhibit hall and several workshop sessions open to all.

Big Tent is a first-of-its-kind event combining ten national Presbyterian conferences under one roof and one theme: "And the Word became flesh" (John 1:14). Included will be the Peacemaking Conference, the Multicultural Churches Conference, and the Social Justice Conference. It takes place June 11-13, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Atlanta. Go to www.pcusa.org/bigtent for online registration or to download a form.

Come Sing With Us!

Choir rehearsals are an important part of worship preparation. Even though we are almost half-way through 2009, we still have much to contribute to the worship and spiritual growth experience you will find at Light Street Presbyterian Church. We have suspended our Thursday night practices for the summer. On Sunday mornings we rehearse before worship from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Please join us! All voices are welcome! For more info., contact our Organist/Choir Director Nick Werner.

Help Lead Worship!

Volunteers are needed to help lead worship each Sunday. This usually involves leading the congregation in the "Call to Worship" and "Prayer for Illumination" and reading the scripture lesson(s) for that Sunday. There is a sign up sheet on the downstairs bulletin board.

Fellowship Hour Volunteers Needed

It's wonderful each Sunday morning, following worship, to be able to gather downstairs for a time of fellowship and refreshment. But, it means someone needs to take responsibility each week for making coffee, providing refreshments, and cleaning up afterwards. If everyone in the congregation signed up to do this just a few Sundays a year, we would have it covered. Many hands make light work! Please sign up on the downstairs bulletin board.

SERMONS
Copies of Roger's sermons are available on the downstairs hall table. Please feel free to pick one up if you missed a Sunday. Or, pass one on to a friend!
